TubeLingua
Purpose of this application
TubeLingua is a Chrome extension for learning languages on YouTube. It overlays bilingual captions on the sentence you are watching, looks up words on that line, loops one caption, and saves timestamped study notes.
This website is public. Anyone can read this page without a Google account and without creating an account. This page is not an authentication wall.
Functionality and features
- Show the original YouTube caption and a translation on the same video frame
- Look up a word on the current caption without opening another browser tab
- Move to the previous or next caption, or loop one sentence (keyboard: Alt+Left, Alt+Right, Alt+R)
- Open a Chrome Side Panel for the transcript, notes, and settings (toolbar icon or Alt+T)
- Save notes with the word, sentence, video identifier, and timestamp after the user authenticates with Google inside the installed extension
Install TubeLingua from the Chrome Web Store, then open a captioned YouTube video. Google authentication happens only inside the installed extension. It does not happen on this website.
Purpose for which this application requests Google user data
TubeLingua requests the user’s Google account email, display name, and profile photo so the extension can (1) display which Google account is connected in the side panel, (2) sync study notes to that user, and (3) check whether a free trial or paid plan is active. TubeLingua does not read Gmail, Google Drive, Contacts, Calendar, or YouTube account data.
